Lifeline to a Secure Future – CalWORKs HSP in Santa Clara County

Article

A survivor of domestic violence, single mother Marquita spent her night fearfully sleeping in her car, the last safe haven she and her daughter could find. When she reached out to the Santa Clara County Social Services Agency’s CalWORKs program for help, she was immediately referred to the Family Services Unit for specialized support in her time of need.

Acting quickly, her employment counselor Sandra Loredo linked her to counseling services and helped her find a temporary safe place at motel until she could be placed into a permanent home. Through the CalWORKs Housing Support Program and with the partnership of Abode Services, Marquita and her daughter found an affordable two-bedroom home. Abode specialists assisted in finding beds, a couch, dining table and other basic home needs. Marquita closely worked with an employment counselor to find a job through a subsidized employment program and is now employed full-time as a staffing coordinator, earning enough to maintain her new home.

Marquita says she is thankful for the support from the CalWORKs Housing Support Program and the many people who helped in her journey to turn her life in safe and positive direction.

Since November 2014, Santa Clara County has served 219 families, which includes 703 children. The CalWORKs Housing Support Program is providing families a lifeline to secure futures.
