County of Orange Adult Protective Services Simulation: Training Beyond the Classroom
Simulation training is widely recognized as an effective training
modality in various fields of employment. However, it is rarely
used among Adult Protective Services programs. This
presentation will provide an overview and video demonstration of
the County of Orange Adult Protective Services (APS) simulation
training for attendees seeking to incorporate experiential
learning in their respective training programs. The County of
Orange APS recently received the 2018 Crown Communities Award
presented by American City & County Magazine in recognition of
developing this simulation training. This simulation training was
the first of its kind in the
state of California, specifically developed for APS social
workers. This simulation training was also selected as a workshop
to be presented at the 2018 Annual National Adult Protective
Services Association (NAPSA) conference. The simulation training
facilitates professional development which translates to enhanced
engagement with the older adult and disabled adult communities it
serves. The goal of the presentation is to provide attendees with
information highlighting the ways in which simulation training
reinforces adult learning theory, guidelines on how to create
simulation role-plays, and how to facilitate strengths-based
feedback for employees. Attendees
will have an opportunity to participate in a facilitated
discussion and receive a simulation step-by-step handbook that
can be customized to individual program needs.
